Shot in Tecún Úman, Guatemala, and Tapachula, México, "La cámara" (30-minutes) documents the challenges faced by Central American refugees in their movement towards safety. Directed and produced with community members and migrants from Central America, the film was shot by Rene Soza who also served as the Director of Photography for 500 Years (2017).
The central person of the film is a deported Salvadoran American whose story speaks to harsh migration policies. Alongside his testimonio, the film's crew spoke with many people fleeing narco-violence, transphobic violence, domestic abuse, and political persecution throughout the isthmus, and further contending with the militarization of the Mexico-Guatemala border in 2019.

The documentary was edited by Koki Ortega (Rehilete Post-Production), whose short form editorial work has been recognized for an Academy Award for best short. During production, the documentary involved community members in direction, reflecting a collaborative process of acompañamiento. The crew thanks the people of Tecún Úman for their support, in particular Brenda, as well as all who shared their stories.
